Filippo Grandi: Taliban Should Enable Safe Environment for IDPs and Immigrants to Return
Kabul – Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, has met with Abdul Salam Hanafi, a senior Taliban member. During the meeting, Mr. Grandi emphasized the need to encourage the immigrants and IDPs to return to the country and to their home provinces, saying Taliban regime must assure Afghan immigrants by creating a safe environment so that they may return to Afghanistan and to their home provinces.
Mr. Grandi has further stated that 55 districts and five major cities in Afghanistan have been identified for the return and reintegration of the IDPs and returnees. Grandi has added that besides humanitarian aid in these areas, civil works and reconstruction will be carried out as well.
Inamullah Samangani, a senior Taliban member, refereeing to Mr. Grandi’s remarks has said that they are pleased that 176,000 IDPs have returned to their home provinces in the past few months.
Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations for Afghanistan was present in the meeting.
Mr. Filippo Grandi arrived in Afghanistan on Tuesday so as to meet with Taliban senior members to discuss the challenges regarding the humanitarian situation in the country and to address the issues of IDPs and children in the country.
